Questions, Answered

The Honest FAQ.

Real questions we get asked. Power and region compatibility, setup, specs, shipping and support.

Power, Setup & Compatibility

Will the Angry Box work in my country / on my mains voltage?+

Yes. Every Angry Box has a universal internal power supply that accepts 90V to 260V AC at 50/60Hz, so the same unit works on US/Japan 110–120V, UK/EU/Australia 220–240V and everything in between. There are no voltage switches or different regional models to worry about; you only need the right plug/cable for your country's socket. It draws just 0.5W in standby.

Do I need a voltage converter or a different model for the US, EU, UK or Japan?+

No. There is a single worldwide version of the Angry Box. Because the power supply is universal (90–260V, 50/60Hz), you don't need a voltage converter or transformer, just a standard power cable or plug adapter for your region's outlet.

What power cable does the Angry Box use, and is one included?+

The Angry Box uses a standard IEC mains inlet. Units ship with a cable appropriate to your shipping region; if you move it to another country you only need a different IEC cable or a plug adapter, with no internal changes.

How do I connect the Angry Box to my interface?+

Each Angry Box has both a balanced XLR input and a TS jack input, so it connects directly to the monitor outputs of virtually any audio interface, mixer or controller. It's an active monitor, so no external amplifier is required.

How do I mount or position the Angry Box?+

It has a 3/8" mic stand thread, so it mounts on standard mic/speaker stands, desk stands, and wall or ceiling brackets. At 14 Ɨ 14 Ɨ 14 cm and 2.5 kg it also sits easily on a desk or meterbridge, and fits positions in immersive rigs that larger monitors can't.

Is the Angry Box an active (powered) monitor?+

Yes. The Angry Box is fully active with a built-in 65W Class D amplifier and onboard DSP, so you connect it straight to a line-level source. No separate power amplifier is needed.

What is the latency of the DSP processing?+

The Angry Box uses a SHARC processor: custom silicon designed for low-latency audio, similar to that used in live sound consoles and speakers. Total digital latency is just 1ms, about the same delay you'd get by moving the speaker back a foot.

The Angry Box

What is the Angry Box?+

The Angry Box is a compact 14cm point-source studio monitor from Tantrum Audio, designed to deliver highly accurate, linear phase and frequency response for professional mixing, mastering and critical listening. A single full-range driver in a sealed enclosure gives it precise stereo imaging and honest midrange.

What is the difference between Full Range Mode and Mid-Focus Mode?+

Full Range Mode provides a balanced, full-spectrum response for general mixing and monitoring. Mid-Focus Mode narrows the response to roughly 90Hz–12kHz, emphasising the midrange where vocals, guitars and most mix decisions live, so your mixes translate across playback systems. You switch between them on the unit via the onboard DSP.

What is the frequency response of the Angry Box?+

Full Range Mode has a -10dB bandwidth of 60Hz to 20kHz. Mid-Focus Mode has a -3dB bandwidth of 90Hz to 12kHz. It holds a flat ±1dB / ±10° response from 300Hz to 12kHz for precision in midrange-critical work.

How loud can the Angry Box go?+

The Angry Box delivers a maximum SPL of 102dB peak, ensuring clarity and power even at high volumes.

What are the dimensions and weight of the Angry Box?+

Each unit measures 14cm x 14cm x 14cm and weighs 2.5kg, making it ultra-compact and easy to position or transport.

Is the Angry Box a good NS10 alternative?+

Yes. The Angry Box was designed with the same philosophy as the Yamaha NS10 (sealed enclosure, fast transients, honest midrange and a low end that rolls off where most playback systems do) but as a modern, actively amplified point-source design with onboard DSP, a built-in mic stand thread and no separate amplifier required. The NS10 is discontinued; the Angry Box is built to do its job today.

What makes the Angry Box different from other studio monitors?+

It combines a sealed enclosure for precise transient response, a true point-source design for consistent stereo imaging at any angle, and integrated DSP with switchable Full Range and Mid-Focus modes. It is engineered to reveal problems in a mix rather than flatter it.

Subwoofers & Immersive

Do I need the Really Mean Sub with the Angry Box?+

Not necessarily. The Angry Box works on its own as a midrange-honest reference monitor. The Really Mean Sub extends the low end below where the Angry Box rolls off, using a 400W ICEpower amplifier, dual-opposing drivers that cancel cabinet vibration, and built-in room correction. Together they form a complete full-range monitoring system.

Can I build a Dolby Atmos system with the Angry Box?+

Yes. Because it's a small, true point-source monitor, the Angry Box is well suited to immersive formats from 5.1 surround up to full 21.1.16 Dolby Atmos. Every unit images identically regardless of angle, and the 14cm cube fits soffits, ceiling mounts and wall brackets where larger monitors won't. Full immersive configurations start from around £6,000.

How does the Angry Box compare to Neumann, Genelec, PMC or ATC for immersive?+

Those are all excellent monitors, but they are two-way designs and expensive per unit, which adds up fast across a 13+ speaker Atmos rig. The Angry Box is a true point-source design at a far lower per-channel cost, with a form factor that fits awkward height and surround positions, making a full immersive system financially and physically practical.

Omnissiah Room Correction

What is Omnissiah?+

Omnissiah is Tantrum Audio's room correction and measurement software. It measures your room in realtime, applies automatic room EQ, and aligns phase and time between speakers. It works with any speakers and any USB measurement mic, and is a one-time purchase with no subscription.

Is Omnissiah a good Sonarworks or ARC alternative?+

Yes. Unlike Sonarworks SoundID Reference (a subscription) and IK Multimedia ARC, Omnissiah is a one-time purchase and adds realtime measurement plus phase and time alignment between speakers, features those tools don't offer. It works with hardware you already own and goes deeper if you run Tantrum DSP products.

Does Omnissiah require Tantrum Audio hardware?+

No. Omnissiah corrects through any audio interface and any USB measurement mic. If you do run an Angry Box or Really Mean Sub, it can tune the DSP natively and save corrections to the hardware so they run on the device with no computer attached.
